The ceilings are not part of a room where we usually fix our attention more. But they have a transcendental importance above all in the sensory and psychological effect that a room produces. A very low ceiling or that seems very low, really does not matter, it gives us a bad feeling. It overwhelms us and makes us feel overwhelmed.
The specialists even say that the low ceilings, or that they give us the impression of being low, can make us feel low spirits. Let's see some ideas to make your ceilings look taller.
1.- The lighting
Correct lighting of the roof is the first and simplest solution for a roof to look higher. Ceiling-mounted floor lamps or wall sconces can serve us well for this purpose.
2.- The furniture
The low profile furniture is ideal for that low ceiling feeling to disappear. The aim is to ensure that the distance between the furniture and the ceiling is as great as possible.
3.- Large windows
A glass wall in a room makes it look more spacious and more luminous. Factors that will result in the feeling that the room has a larger size.
4.- Decorate the walls with vertical stripes
You can be more or less in favor of the stripes in the decoration but the truth is that the vertical stripes stylize the support on which they are. They will create a good feeling of height.
5.- Doors to the ceiling
A door from floor to ceiling may seem strange at first. However we must admit that it is a brilliant idea to create the illusion of a generous space.
6.- Bright paint
Brilliant paint is rarely used on walls and ceilings but it can work very well to create that height sensation we are looking for. A major drawback is the fact that it must be applied on a perfect surface or scandalously highlight all imperfections.
7- Hang the highest paintings
For a better result, use framed images or paintings vertically. The walls will look taller so the distance between the ceiling and the floor will also seem higher.
8.- Paint the ceiling lighter than the rest
The lighter ceilings create an imposing effect and give shape to the illusion of a large and luminous space. A dark colored floor will give us the same effect.
9.- The curtains
Long curtains always emphasize the length. Even if the windows are small, the floor-to-ceiling curtains will reveal magnificent features of the room we were not aware of.
10.- Painting a diagonal on the wall
Another great tip to create the illusion of a high ceiling is to paint a diagonal on one of the walls. The space will open and the perspective will change. To get the best result you have to start from the center of the wall and finish in the upper left corner of the room, or in the upper right corner, depending on the wall you decide to use.
11.- Avoid the use of hanging lamps
The hanging lamps are specially designed for high ceilings. Mainly because they make the roof look closer to the floor. If you have low ceilings, we recommend that you use recessed lighting, even if they do not have an attractive design.
12.- Avoid disorder
The disorder is bad for everything in decoration, also in this respect, because it exaggerates any defect that a room has. Remove any additional detail or piece of furniture that does not fit well in the decoration. A simple interior design will allow a broader look and the feeling that everything is bigger than it is.
This is a little trick reminiscent of illusionism. It is about diverting attention therefore if we put a striking carpet we will not look at the ceiling with such attention.
14.- High shelves
Every vertical complement that we install on a wall will have the virtue of styling it and making the ceilings look taller. No matter what we put in it, a tall bookcase will create that height sensation of the ceiling we seek.
15.- Stylized accessories
According to what we have been saying, any accessory or complement of vertical or elongated shape will have a decisive effect when it comes to seeing the highest space in a room. Tall branches, in a low vase, or any similar object will serve this purpose.
